Benton County Jail Overview
Benton County Jail, also published by the county as Benton County Corrections, is operated by the Benton County Corrections Department. The jail is inside the Benton County Justice Center complex in Kennewick and serves every local law-enforcement jurisdiction in the county, including Kennewick, Richland, West Richland, Prosser, and Benton City. The county also says the jail provides contract services to outside agencies in Washington.
The facility holds pre-trial detainees, people serving local court sentences, self-surrenders, warrant turn-ins, city arrestees, and some contract or other-agency holds. The public roster inspected for research included a USM CONTRACT charge description, so a federal contract hold may appear on the Benton County Jail roster. That does not make the jail a federal prison or separate U.S. Marshals facility. It remains a county jail with local roster, mail, visitation, and commissary rules.
The Benton County Corrections page is the official source for the jail's local role, address, average daily population, and capacity.
The county's jail page ties the facility to the local inmate population rather than to a sheriff-only or state-prison lookup system.
Benton County Jail Population
The strongest official figures in the research are the county's stated 720-inmate capacity and 475 average daily population, both reviewed on July 2, 2026. The county's About Us page says the new jail opened to inmates on April 1, 2003 with 561 beds. After renovation of the old jail facility, the connected facilities reached the current 720-bed capacity. A live Tyler roster search with In Custody checked returned 398 current records on July 2, 2026. That roster number changes daily and should be treated as a snapshot, not a fixed population count.
The Benton County Corrections About Us page gives the facility history and the 720-bed connected-facility capacity.
Those capacity details are useful because Benton County Jail is a large regional county jail, not a small police lockup.
Search Benton County Jail Roster
Use the Benton County Daily Jail Roster and the linked Tyler/New World Inmate Inquiry portal for current county jail custody. The county's own search tip is to use fewer terms. If the exact booking date is not known, delete the dates from the booking date boxes. Pay close attention to the In Custody checkbox because it limits the search to current jail bookings when checked.
- Open the official Daily Jail Roster page, then continue to the Tyler/New World Inmate Inquiry portal.
- Search by name, subject number, booking number, booking date range, or housing facility.
- Use the In Custody checkbox when the goal is to confirm that a person is currently held.
- Click the linked name to see booking history, booking number, booking date, release date if any, housing facility, bond fields, and charges.
- If a person has transferred to state prison, use the Washington State Department of Corrections search instead of the county roster.
The roster housing dropdown includes Benton County Corrections Deptment and Benton County Alternative Programs. The spelling Deptment appears in the roster. Alternative Programs should be read as a county custody or alternative-sentence status, not as a separate Benton County facility page.
Benton County Jail Contact
Use the jail business phone and the county Corrections address for jail records, inmate-care routing, business mail, and lobby questions. Law-enforcement reports often route through sheriff records, and court files route through District Court, Superior Court, or the Clerk. The buildings are close together in the Justice Center area, but they are different legal offices.

Benton County Jail Visitation
Benton County Jail uses phone, mail, and on-demand tablet video visitation. The jail does not accept incoming calls for inmates. Video visitation is initiated by the inmate when the person has tablet access during out-of-cell or dayroom time. Each inmate receives 30 minutes of free video visitation per week. Friends and family can place funds on their own visitation account through GettingOut, but those funds pay for that visitor's contact and do not become inmate commissary money.
| Visit or Contact Type | Schedule or Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Video visitation | On demand during inmate out-of-cell or dayroom time | Started by the inmate through tablet access. |
| Free video time | 30 minutes per week | Provided by Benton County Jail rule. |
| Visitor-funded video | gettingout.com or 866-516-0115 | Funds go to the visitor's account for visits with that inmate. |
| Phone calls | ViaPath or ConnectNetwork | Create or fund a telephone account at 800-483-8314 or connectnetwork.com. |
| In-person lobby access | Use posted jail lobby hours | Confirm current lobby status before traveling on weekends or holidays. |
The Benton County inmate mail and visitation page is the official source for phone, mail, and tablet video rules.
The county's visitation rules are built around tablet video access and account funding, not a fixed public walk-in visiting calendar.
Benton County Jail Mail and Money
Mail must use the inmate's name as it appears on the roster. The housing unit may be included if known. Incoming mail must have a USPS return address with an identifiable first and last name. Mail that cannot be matched to the intended inmate can be returned to sender with the reason noted.

The Benton County inmate accounts page documents Access Corrections online, phone, and kiosk deposit options.
The county did not publish a complete commissary price list or vendor fee schedule in the official sources reviewed, so confirm fees with Access Corrections before depositing funds.
Benton County Jail Intake
People serving a court-ordered sentence or turning themselves in on a warrant during normal business hours should report to the lobby of the main jail entrance. If the lobby is closed, the county says the after-hours entrance is to the left of the main entrance and has a button for assistance. On admission, inmates are searched and property is inventoried and stored. The county advises leaving valuables at home when possible.
Newly admitted inmates are placed in pre-classification holding units while individual histories are reviewed. After classification, they move to an appropriate housing unit. Classification is the jail process that considers custody needs, safety issues, medical or mental-health needs, court transport, and housing fit. The Support Division oversees classification, court and transport, medical, and mental-health services.
The Benton County Coming to Jail page is the official intake source for self-surrender, after-hours entry, property inventory, and pre-classification housing.
That intake sequence explains why a person may be booked before housing placement or full roster details settle.
Benton County Jail Lookup Limits
Benton County Jail is the correct lookup point for county jail custody. It is not the correct final search for every person arrested in Benton County. A sentenced felony prisoner who transfers into state prison custody should be searched through the Washington State Department of Corrections Incarcerated Search. VINELink is available for custody notifications and can be linked from DOC results.
| Custody Situation | Lookup System | What to Remember |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-trial county jail custody | Benton County roster | Use for current Benton County Jail bookings and local holds. |
| Local sentence in county jail | Benton County roster | Use while the person remains housed in the county jail. |
| Sentenced state prison custody | Washington DOC Incarcerated Search | No DOC prison was found physically in Benton County. |
| Sentenced federal prison custody | Federal Bureau of Prisons locator | Best after federal sentencing and BOP designation. |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator | No dedicated ICE detention facility was found in Benton County official sources. |
For a broader explanation of current and past county custody records, the Benton County inmate records page covers roster fields, records requests, DOC, BOP, ICE, and VINELink distinctions.
Benton County Jail Property
General property deliveries are limited. Official research found allowed exceptions for court clothes during jury trials, prescription eyeglasses, necessary medical equipment as evaluated by jail medical staff, and current prescription drugs in original containers. Inmates may sign release forms for third-party property pickup, except clothing. Property pickup requires photo identification and uses the after-hours jail entrance to the left of the main lobby.
Pickup times listed in the research are 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Confirm the inmate is still housed at Benton County Jail before bringing property, scheduling video contact, or sending money. A transfer, release, DOC hold, federal hold, or court movement can change the right office fast.
Note: Confirm custody, housing, and current lobby access with Benton County Jail before traveling or depositing money.
